Paper: The Sadness of Christ's Persecution Captured in Sodoma's Painting

The thorn crown protruding his forehead made blood drip down into his face. Shadows show every line and curve of His body. It looks real and very naturalistic. This painting was more of a close-up picture. You can only see the upper body area. You dont see anything else. There appears to be 4 other people surrounding Jesus Christ. On the left, it looks to me as if he was Judas, one who betrayed Jesus Christ by being dishonest and committing treachery. The man on the right wears a red cape and head wrap. He looks like Pontius Pilate. He became famous by persecuting Jesus Christ. The other people behind the three main characters must be the followers of Jesus Christ because you see their face a little bit. It shows the emotion and the sorrow on their face. They also look like they have a halo over their heads. There is no background to the painting. It is all black. All you see are the people. The lighting for the people in the back is not the same as the lighting towards the people in the front. Jesus has the most glowing effect while Pilate and Judas just have very little lighting. Just to show to the viewer and distinguish the faces. Judas and Pilates facial expressions are very calm and careless. The paintings have sfumato effects. Sfumato means from fumo, the Italian word for smoke. The term refers to the subtle transition of tones from light to dark in oil painting. Sfumato gives forms softer and more naturalistic contours. Ichose this painting because | grew up in a Catholic family. | was drawn into this painting because it reminded me of when it was the first time that | watched the story Jesus of Nazareth with my parents. The sadness that | felt as | stood in front of the painting that represented Jesus being prosecuted for our sins was intense. It also showed me that in the 15th century, most of the paintings, sculptures and frescos were based on religion. | liked this painting most of all. It was very interesting and intriguing in my eyes....
