Paper: An Argument Against the Manipulation of Images and Current Events by the Media

Even giving an image a certain label have a major impact. Snipping someone out here and placing him or her somewhere else in theory doesn't sound bad. Yet when one look's at the potential impact a simple act like that could have on an issue, it reveals itself as being an aid to deceive anyone who looks upon the image. These techniques can be used to gain the support of people for any number of viewpoints. In the manipulation of current events it can distort peoples understanding of the truth. They perceive things in a fashion where they are led to believe certain viewpoints. This gives the people who define what we do and do not see control of our perceptions of what is going on around us. This may enable the media to control us through controlling our opinions. Manipulation of currant news events does not occur in a random fashion, and rarely will stray into territory that might cause discomfort for those who hold political and economic power. Power can be gained from the most meager change, which is a handy tool when you wish to control people's thoughts and ideas on issues. Surely some bias is inescapable, but when reporting current events it is totally unacceptable to manipulate an image to suit the opinion story of a particular minority. Even in advertising manipulated images are forever being used, generally at an acceptable level. Yet when does it become unacceptable? When these images are manipulated they set out to create the perfect standard. These are telling people the way they should be and what products they must obtain to reach these standards. The irony is that these perfect examples may have been altered to achieve an impossible ideal. This can be seen in the portrayal of women as impossibly thin and beautiful. As we can see, manipulation of images is censorship of the truth and in manipulating these images. they also manipulate people's beliefs and judgments....
