Paper: An Analysis of China Providing Good Child Care Alternatives For Working Mothers

China has made great strides to provide good child care alternatives for working mothers. The childcare system is decentralized to allow local areas to provide facilities that meet their specific needs. Though the administrative functions are decentralized, China has commonly held goals that each caregiver should teach the children. It is interesting to note that the teachers instill behaviors that encourage group cooperation. Individual competition is discouraged. Most things focus on being successful as a group or helping another child. Winning is secondary to being cooperative and sharing. It is hard to believe that the Chinese teachers do not have to employ sanctions or any kind of punishment. With groups of young preschool children it seems likely that at some point the staff members would have to use negative consequences. Gentle persuasion might not work under all circumstances. The article attributes some support by stating that the teachers were chosen because of the interest and love for children. Again, | am not totally convinced that the system works as well as reported. | like the idea of instilling values that show concern for others. Cooperation is also an important thing. The article stated one preschool had toys that were too heavy for a single child. Many American activities focus on an individual child beating the others. In China, women are an important part of the work force. The percentage of American women may not be as high as their Chinese counterparts. Concern about adequate childcare is a pressing issue in this country. China has established a set of standard values that elevates some of these concerns. America may never be able to provide, or run child care centers that impart standard goals, but it is a model to evaluate. Childcare is a pressing issue in America. In order to have productive women workers, safe, adequate day care facilities need to be established. China has made a commitment to teach their children certain values and provide alternatives for each working mother.
