Chaplin's style of acting he was copied by most other studios. Charlie Chaplin Alone costed the Mutual company $520,000 a year, and when his contract was signed he received an additional bonus of $150,000. Charlie Chaplin was the most famous film star of his day. In Europe he was known as Charlot and huge crowds came to see him when he toured there. He also starred in his own cartoon. A variety of Chaplin toys went on sale, including clockwork dolls and painted statuettes. Charlie married Mildred Harris in 1918. Mildred divorced him in 1920. In 1924 Chaplin married Lita Grey and in 1927, Lita Grey divorced him. Then in 1935 Chaplin marries Paulette Goddard and in the summer of 1942 Paulette divorced him. Then in 1943 Chaplin marries Oona O'n whom he lives with through the rest of his life. Charlie bought many houses and he even bought his mom a home in California. He bought himself a house in Switzerland where he died on December 25, 1977. Overall Charlie Chaplin lived a long and happy life both in front and behind a camera. He loved America very much. He was quoted as saying "This is truly the land of opportunity". Also the immortal Charlie Chaplin “Going to see Charlie Chaplin has become a habit all over the country" proclaimed Photoplay Magazine in 1915 " With his doleful conteance, his heavy feet, his characteristics French kick, his diminutive mustache and his ridiculous actions he has earned a place all his own in the realm of motion pictures”.
